Here is an evalution carried out by teachers in Staffordshire:
Good points
Really easy to work out how to use it – could start using it immediately with a class of children without spending hours working out what to do with it and how to navigate round. Could also just let children explore the package themselves to find out how to use it.
Can switch between different levels within the story, or do the whole story in one level – really useful tool for classes with a broad range of ability/experience.
Good games for the children to do individually or as whole class activities for some stories – again, differentiated into different levels: Eg. words, phrases, expanded phrases, sentences.
Can download script in lots of different language, includes notes on the key teaching point of each level too, but doesn’t necessarily explain the finer grammatical points for non-specialists – eg reason for using different endings on possessives.
Can translate some stories from eg. French to Polish to help EAL children.
Can hide text or pictures – when using a translated version, can hide the translation also.
Generally a really good resource for people teaching at any level in primary schools, and some stories also useful for middle/high schools. Teacher’s own language level does not have to be very high to be able to use it.
On the down side…
The less “popular” the language, the less there is available – but there is still at least something there. There are dozens of stories for English, French and Spanish, several for German and Italian, and a few for Mandarin and a couple for Polish.
Stories aren’t all differentiated into the same number of levels.
French • English • Spanish • German • Italian • Chinese • Polish • Russian
